Bridges of Paris
BODY OF WORK Representing the Bridges of Paris. 2018
The works were completed in Paris while on an art residency at the International Cite’ des Arts. The 37 bridges of Paris dominate the Parisian landscape, each with its own character, history and defining lines and structure. During my residency I completed 27 of the bridges.
The river SEINE, the belly of the city, flows down stream vibrant and alive, constantly on the move, passing under each of the bridges with an unstoppable force. The Bridges allow the flow of movement from the left to the right banks of the city, a lifeline for the people who live and work in this city which is divided by a river. I tried to portray a parallel between the history and the freedom of movement for all (or not) and the beauty of Paris in a contemporary way in these “flat” and “peaceful” structures of paint and mixed media on paper. My intention was to create a sense of calm and design in an “almost silk screen look” of the 70’s, almost POP in style and to capture the essence of each of the bridges. Using pre-digital, old school-style stencil for lettering, in the naming of the bridges, and a dynamic colour choice. Each work is numbered #1- #27 in the order they were completed.
Exhibited in Paris at the Internationale Cite des Arts “The Corridor” in October 2018.
